By the Summer of 1963, pop music was flourishing, with a wide variety of styles providing content that crossed the preestablished boundaries of sales charts.

R&B, Easy Listening, Novelty, Girl Groups, Folk Music, Surf Music, Country-Western and even the occasional Rock and Roll hit all combined to provide some of the most diverse and satisfying listening experiences on local hit radio stations.

While businessmen tried to corral the varied styles into appropriate ‘boxes’ to meet station formats and chart classifications, none of that mattered to the public, so long as they heard something that they liked. Rarely has so much stylistic diversity been on the pop charts at the same time.
