Broadway Cast Recording: My Fair Lady
Album #5 - April 1956
Episode date - February 22, 2023
Soundtrack recordings may have been the biggest beneficiary of the new long player format. Finally, there was a way to market a musical by presenting virtually all of its songs on one disc.
The album was so perfect for soundtracks that it stimulated a Broadway revival and “My Fair Lady” was certainly one of the best. Composed by Alan Lerner and Frederick Lowe, the songwriting is stunning in its ability to move the storyline forward within the context of a seemingly unending parade of unforgettable melodies. The performances of Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews is the cherry on top, providing a presentation so perfect that other versions of these songs can only disappoint.
The album remained at #1 for a stunning fifteen weeks, lingering on the Billboard 200 for a total of 480 weeks. Almost ten years! “My Fair Lady” became an instant über classic and it remains one of the most successful (and one of the best) Broadway soundtracks of all time.
