By 1970, Clapton was used to being famous. In point of fact, he was virtually worshipped. “Clapton Is God” was common graffiti in London, which led to the international Cream frenzy, which then also made his next project, Blind Faith, instantly huge.

With Derek and the Dominos, he hid behind the band name and appropriated American musicians. You would think that such a simple ploy could not possibly work, but remember, 1970 was different from 2020. Few got word of Clapton’s new project, and it sold much worse than expected. In the UK, the album didn’t chart at all, so in a sense, Clapton got what he wanted. Two years later, Atlantic Records released “Layla” as a single and it became a huge hit single, causing a reassessment of this album, which is now considered a highlight in Clapton’s career. Go figure.
