4 Sleepers
1973
Episode date - June 26, 2013
Here are a few more reasons to wish that it was 1973 all over again. Each of these albums have reached forty years in age, but have survived with a somewhat questionable degree of appreciation for their influence.
Toots and the Maytals American debut record was completely overwhelmed by the attention paid to Bob Marley. Tower of Power was hugely popular as session musicians but had a hard time crossing over to the mainstream. The Eagles’ second album crash landed on the marketplace and remains their worst-selling album, and Stephen Stills’ second album with Manassas sounded too similar to the first album, without the diversity of the double album that preceded it.
For all of these faults, each album still retains its own charm. For me, “Funky Kingston” may be my favorite reggae album of all time, so there’s plenty to appreciate here.
