The History of American Gospel Music : A Strange Birth
Episode 1
Episode date - March 14, 2025
It is a simple fact to say that Gospel music has proven to be the primary influence on popular music. Its point of relevance is simply not debatable.
Numerous musicologists often point to rhythm and blues and country-western music as the primary elements of rock and roll, without acknowledging that Gospel music played a major role in the development of those styles as well. Gospel music is the root upon which contemporary music was built and there is certainly nothing else more elemental and universal in its influence. The story of Gospel music is complex and often misunderstood. With our debut episode in this new series, we start at an awkward beginning that barely suggests the power and influence that Gospel music would eventually convey upon our new nation.
