It’s appallingly sad to note that the glory years of Gospel music started to dissipate quickly after the assassination of Martin Luther King.

The message of God’s righteousness fit perfectly with the message of equality that the civil rights era magnified, but without a figurehead, its message started to dilute. A few years later, the death of Mahalia Jackson made some mourners feel as though she might have taken what was left of the living spirit of Gospel music with her.

The times were definitely a-changin’, but there were signs that the sense of loss was a premature autopsy, as can be proven by the songs included in this show.
