To be a phoenix, you must rise from the ashes – but there is nothing glorious about turning to ash.

As the seventies slogged their way to an end, the decade had run roughshod over Aretha. Popular music was divided in half, with punk rock pulling in one direction and disco in the opposite. With those being the choices, it’s not too surprising which way Aretha shifted, but the cold shallowness of disco was thoroughly unsuitable for her talents, and as a result her music faded away into the ash. Spiritually, though, Aretha Franklin did not falter. After all, she was her father’s daughter. The story does not end here.
