    After struggling for over five years to make a mark at Columbia Records, Aretha Franklin had little to show for all her effort.

    Despite trying nearly everything they could think of, Columbia simply did not have a vision for her. After taking a year off to lick her wounds, Aretha Franklin signed with Atlantic Records, a company that could barely be any more different than Columbia, and the results were instantaneous.

    After a half-decade of struggling, Aretha became an ‘instant’ superstar.
