The Life and Music of Aretha Franklin: The Earthly and the Eternal
Episode 15
Episode date - January 31, 2025
Last show, we dedicated most of the show to Aretha Franklin’s live performance at the Fillmore West, where she seduced the hippie culture with unanimous success. Due to time, we needed to excerpt one remarkable track from that show, and today it provides us with a very interesting juxtaposition.
We start with what may be described as the most sexually frank recording of Ms. Franklin’s entire career, which provides stark contrast to the brilliant, powerful Gospel songs that follow. Coincidentally, we move from the sexual to the sacred, and rather convincingly present the suggestion that there is commonality between the two extremes. If you ever questioned the sheer scope of Aretha Franklin’s work, you need look no further than today’s offering.
All featured tracks are live performances.
