While reading Eric Clapton’s autobiography, I couldn’t help but get the feeling that he did everything within his power to make his own life incredibly difficult. He fought with so many inner demons, and it wasn’t until the late ‘80s that he seemed to have finally gotten a grasp on self-control, and perhaps even a taste of genuine happiness.

His son Conor seemed to provide Clapton with a focal point in his life, which only makes his sudden death all the more tragic sad. I personally cannot imagine any grief greater than the loss of a child. Clapton is an extremely private person, so the unwanted attention from fans and the press during this living nightmare could have been ruinous. Somehow, though, it all seemed to deepen his resolve, and it even crept into his artistry.
