The adverse effects of the Depression did not set in immediately for the outer, rural sections of the country. There, the effects came on slowly and then sank in deeply.

For a while, it appeared that Jimmie Rodgers might somehow be unaffected, as his popularity remained consistent, but in time, it became very obvious that the public was having enough problems without spending an entire day’s wage on a 78 RPM record. It didn’t help matters that a pack of copycat artists were cropping up like weeds, which led to a general dismissal of anybody who yodeled. Worse, Rodgers’ health deteriorated steadily, making live appearances difficult and sometimes brutal.

Regardless of thee setbacks, Jimmie Rodgers plugged on, trying to simultaneously beat time and fate.
