As 1959 came around, rock and roll retained its grip on the pop music charts, although it started to become much more commercialized and significantly less intense.

The up side of all this was that its sound diversified, absorbing everything from doo-wop to country to Tex Mex to R&B, making disparate styles sound not only compatible but complimentary.
