Few soundtracks manage to outstrip the film they are supporting, but “Superfly” is one such soundtrack.

Curtis Mayfield’s perspective on the harm done by drugs in the inner city is crystal clear in these songs, thus providing a moral to the story told in the film. The movie needed the soundtrack to make its point, while the soundtrack stood on its own. Mayfield was always conscientious with his music.
