Simon & Garfunkel: The Graduate
Episode 5
Episode date - February 26, 2016
By 1967, Simon and Garfunkel were one of the most popular musical acts in the country, so it is odd to note that they did not release an album that year, nor did they have a significant hit single. Nevertheless, they remained in the public spotlight through significant radio play of their catalogue, which fit well on the newer FM radio stations, and live appearances.
Another factor for the group having no releases is that Paul Simon quite simply was not a prolific songwriter. A very large portion of the material that appeared on their first three albums dated back to Paul’s time in England, and by 1967, that well had run dry, and he needed to compile a new collection of songs for the next album. Of course, the label hoped for a 1967 release, but preparations bled into 1968.
Meanwhile, their involvement with the film “The Graduate” provided yet another opportunity to recycle some of the older songs, while simultaneously entrenching their catalog into the minds of music fans.
