When Paul Simon returned from England, he expected his reception to resemble the greeting intimated by his (then) most recognized song. “Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. was doomed from the start, so Simon had every reason to expect public reaction to be “the sound of silence”. Producer Tom Wilson also saw the writing on the wall, but had an inspiration that he realized might salvage something from the wreckage.

Having just completed the session for Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”, where the acclaimed folk artist utilized rock and roll musicians to generate a monstrous hit record, Wilson contacted the very same group of musicians, and hired them to play rock and roll over Simon and Garfunkel’s gentle folk recording. The session ran roughshod over the nuances of the original recording, making Paul’s guitar work all but inaudible, but Wilson’s hunch was spot on. In 1965, the public demand for rock and roll overwhelmed the folk movement. Wilson inherently knew this, and by tapping into the zeitgeist of the times, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were unwittingly launched into the spotlight.

This show covers the time period where public awareness of Simon and Garfunkel begins.
