Few superstars had beginnings that were as inauspicious as Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

As teenagers living in the Borough of Queens, they came of age just as the doo-wop craze began to settle onto the local scene, and became enamored with it. Paul in particular heard the music as a calling, and started writing songs at a very young age. While still in school, he teamed up with his friend Artie to record some of his material, and with a bit of luck, found themselves with a regional hit called, appropriately enough, “Hey Schoolgirl.”

Fame was short-lived, though, and Paul found himself scrapping for a follow-up. He adopted a variety of pseudonyms and struggled until the burgeoning folk movement led him to reunite with Art Garfunkel. At that time, Greenwich Village became the center of the folk scene, so they would take the subway into NYC to perform at “Hootenanny” nights, where they were soon discovered by Columbia Records and signed. This show covers the time period before happenstance brought the duo fame and fortune.
