Early Big Band Era: A Rambling Look
Episode 4
Episode date - July 29, 2011
In this show we take one more rambling look at some of the most interesting music from the pre-big band era of 1928-1935.
I say ‘rambling’ because it is well nigh impossible to arrange these songs in a strict chronological order without making it even more confusing that it already is! Players switched units with regularity, and units changed names constantly, so a linear and unified story is elusive at best, but the music is the point of this series, so here are the songs and artists covered in this program;
The Boy in the Boat – Charlie Johnson
Hello Lola – Pee Wee Russell
I’m Gonna Stomp Mr. Henry Lee – Eddie Condon’s Hot Shots
Heebie Jeebies – Mills Blue Rhythm Band
Ozark Mountain Blues – The Missourians
6) Jitterbug - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
7) The Man from Harlem - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
Minnie the Moocher - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
Minnie the Moocher’s Wedding Day - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
The Reefer Man - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
King Porter Stomp – Teddy Hill & his NBC Orchestra
Limehouse Blues – Wingy Manone
Tar Paper Stomp – Wingy Manone
