The Beatles: Pre-Beatle Days
Episode 1
Episode date - August 26, 2011
To be completely honest, I am approaching our upcoming coverage of the Beatles with a combination of anticipation and trepidation. I anticipate this because like almost everyone else, I love the band and consider them to be the single most influential group of musicians on my own musical tastes. I worry about our coverage, though, because it is almost impossible to say anything new, or to shed new ‘insights’ on their work. The best I can hope for is to be reasonably accurate, while conveying their music with all of the respect that it deserves.
If you already like (or love) the Beatles, I don’t want to disappoint you. If you are crazy, and dislike the Beatles, I intend to change your perspective, but I hope to do so with honesty and accuracy. That being said, this is a live radio program, so if you expect historical perfectionism, read a book. We will do our level best to cover the band’s history by focusing almost exclusively on their music, and I hope you appreciate this as much as we expect to, despite our trepidation.
For the very first show, we focus on the early years of the members, covering the time period before they were even known as “The Beatles.” It is a humble beginning, and we hope that today’s show will help to humanize the Fab Four by conveying them as fairly normal guys with budding talent, outsized egos, and plenty of ambition.
