James Brown may have earned the moniker ‘Hardest Working Band in Show Business,” but I doubt that he ever worked as relentlessly and consistently as the Beatles were working in 1963.

Live shows took place almost nightly, interspersed with numerous radio appearances and the occasional recording studio appointment whenever it could be squeezed in. Add in the travel time required to get from one obligation to the next, not to mention the time required to write their own material, and you have a grueling schedule that would destroy mere mortals. In 1963, though, the Beatles stamina was even greater than their popularity. They were up to the task, and for the time being, found most of it exhilarating and enjoyable. Unfortunately, most of the live shows were not documented, but the lion’s share of their radio appearances were saved.

Our previous show covered the first two weeks of July 1963. With this show we pick up where we left off, focusing on radio recordings from the second half of that same month. Imagine the creative output that was coming from the Beatles at this time. The BBC sessions featured in this show took place while they worked diligently on writing and recording songs for their second album, all the while traveling the length of Great Britain for live appearances that had them working nearly every night.
