The British Invasion: The Second Wave
Episode 3
Episode date - July 30, 2010
Most historians lump all English artists who debuted in the U.S. during 1964 into the ‘first wave’ of the British Invasion. I, however, feel it would be more accurate to label the second half of 1964 as the second wave. The first wave – a tidal wave – consisted almost primarily of the Beatles, with bits and pieces (no pun intended) by artists like the Dave Clark Five and Dusty Springfield.
It wasn’t until July that America began to get a more representative sampling of the English Beat Boom, not to mention a hearty dose of the English obsession with American blues and R&B. This second wave brought in the likes of the Animals, Manfred Mann, the Kinks and to a lesser extent, the Rolling Stones, Chad and Jeremy and the Zombies.
Believe it or not, neither Herman’s Hermits nor Freddie and the Dreamers managed to score a pop hit in the U.S. until very late 1964/ early1965, so that is for the next show.
