The Rolling Stones: Darkness at Altamont
Episode 24
Episode date - February 7, 2014
On December 6, 1969, the optimism inherent in the ‘60s youth movement died an ignominious death, and in many ways, it is appropriate that the Rolling Stones were the band to oversee the downfall.
From the beginning of their existence, the Stones had been pushing society’s ‘envelope.’ An aura of sadomasochistic, sex obsessed, drug-fueled and violent behavior followed them every step of the way, and so it only makes sense that the peace and love movement would come crashing down on their watch. Ultimately, it is very sad, and the Stones, Mick Jagger in particular, got a bum rap for the events of this day. Jagger worked overtime to calm the crowd down, stopping the music and using the language of the ‘flower generation’ in his attempt to instill calm, but the gods had their minds made up on this one, and an audience member was murdered right at the foot of the stage. So much for ‘proving’ what we were capable of when left to our own devices…
Despite the horrible events of this day, the Stones tour of 1969 might have been their best musically, as proven by the live recordings on this program.
