This show covers one of the stranger aspects of Rolling Stones history. It is quite obvious from their interviews, their history, and of course, the material that they recorded up until this point in time, that the Rolling Stones were obsessed with American blues and R&B.

However, the fact that the Beatles were the most popular band in the country (the world, actually) and they wrote most of their own material presented a problem and a challenge to the Rolling Stones. The problems were twofold. First, if they did not write songs, they would be reliant upon finding enough material to maintain their career. Second, they would not make any songwriting royalties on their recordings. Manager Andrew Oldham recognized the problem, and picked Mick and Keith to rectify the situation.

The strange thing, though, is that when these two blues-obsessed London boys set about learning how to write their own songs, they never came anywhere near the blues! Most of their material was lachrymose and sappy ‘in and out of love’ songs, with little commercial appeal. Eventually, they would get it right. This show covers the point I time before they did.
