A lot of time passed between sessions for Exile on Main Street and the next album.

The whole process of ‘getting out of Dodge’ before the cops came knocking, then trying to make sense of the musical miasma caused the band to spend a lengthy amount of time nixing the album in Los Angeles, then dealing with legal issues that further delayed the album’s release. Finally, once “Exile” was released, the band then went on tour throughout the summer of ’72, before reconvening in Jamaica, their new ‘location du jour’ for recording yet another album.

This time, the wear and tear took its toll, and it was audible in the material. Instead of rocking rave-ups and rebellion, the band sounded exhausted, limping through songs like “Coming Down Again” and “Can You Hear the Music.” “Goats’ Head Soup” was the resultant album, and it captures a band struggling to maintain an identity.
