I suppose it should come as no surprise when a celebrity passes away at the age of 89, but still in all, it saddened me to hear that the ailing Fats Domino had passed away today.

Fats was one of the first musicians to put New Orleans’ style of rock and roll on the map. Amazingly, he also represents one of that cities’ last remaining legends. Now, I can say with great sadness and more than an ounce of truth that they truly are all gone.

For generations, Fats Domino represented an aspect of the city that nobody else was qualified for. Despite being one of the biggest stars to emerge from the Crescent City, he was a quiet, reticent man who preferred home life to the limelight. An era that began over seventy years ago has come to an end. New Orleans will never be the same without him.
