The History of Guitar in America 1922-1962: The Kings of Rock and Roll Guitar
Episode 26
Episode date - August 16, 2024
As this series did its best to prove, there are a lot of innovators who helped develop the guitar to become the single most important instrument in popular culture, but few, if any, did more to popularize the guitar than Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry…and they both worked at Chess Records in Chicago.
When we started this series, there were two guitarists who I knew would represent the absolute domination of the guitar on American culture, with rock and roll providing the means. These are those two guys. To cover their scope, we do our best to convey some of their biggest hits (of which we would need to cover all of them) and a few obscure numbers that display their unique styles.
Featured tracks include:
Maybelline
You Can’t Catch Me
Roly Poly
School Day
Deep Feeling
Johnny B. Goode
Carol
Liverpool Drive (all the above by Chuck Berry)
Bo Diddley
I’m a Man
Diddley Daddy
She’s Fine She’s Mine

Hey! Bo Diddley (all of the above by Bo Diddley)
