The Rolling Stones & American Blues
Episode 3
Episode date - August 23, 2013
From virtually all accounts, the Rolling Stones disparaged pop music. They saw themselves as England’s response American Blues – they were spokesmen for their heroes like Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed. Meanwhile, though, the world had a completely different perspective.
The Beatles changed England’s perception of what regional popular music could be, while simultaneously changing America’s idea of rock and roll. Suddenly, beat music was all the rage, especially British beat music. The Rolling Stones could say whatever they wanted to say about the music they played, but their audience didn’t concern themselves with categories. It was new, it was different, and it was exciting. What else mattered?
It didn’t matter that the Rolling Stones 1st album was a collection of American Blues songs. American and British teenagers heard British rock and roll. The die was cast.
