From a fan’s perspective, Brian Jones didn’t suddenly die so much as he simply faded away.

Sure, we heard the news of his apparent drowning, but his presence on “Beggar’s Banquet” was already ghost-like. Then, after his passing, he remained like an apparition, appearing on the cover of the greatest hits collection, “Through the Past, Darkly,” and credited for some input on “Let It Bleed.”

At first, new recruit Mick Taylor was simply adding overdubs to otherwise completed tracks, but fans welcomed his input. Here was somebody who not only was willing to play guitar, but could do it quite well. Best of all, he fell into step quite beautifully with Keith. His first album with the band was “Let It Bleed” and it was a masterpiece that equaled or perhaps even surpassed “Beggar’s Banquet.” Brian may have been gone, but the Stones never missed a beat.
