Twelve years into his career as a reggae artist, Bob Marley had a formidable catalogue of songs and albums, but with “Exodus”, he reached a peak that overwhelmed just about everything else that he done up to this point.

“Exodus” is a very straightforward and plain-spoken album, with a variety of songs that are laid out thematically. Side one covers his religious/political views and represents the darker side of his songwriting, while side two is a call to love and unity. Taken together, the themes cover a lot of ground, portraying Marley as a serious thinker with an instinctive talent for catchy melodies.

Releasing this album soon after an asassination attempt on his life (and his wife Rita) made every song that much more poignant.
