From Memphis to Muscle Shoals: The Cultural Transition Begins
Episode 24
Episode date - March 3, 2017
At the close of the sixties, our culture started to change quickly, and American seemed unprepared for it.
After Elvis utilized the studio, it almost seemed as if they had reached their goal, and decided to coast for a while. That was not the case, but they also knew that they no longer needed to hustle as much as before. They made their reputation as a bunch of good ol’ boys writing and recording pop hits for stars, but the hippie movement changed the focus of the music industry. Now, bands were doing it for themselves, and most people started to abandon AM hits for the deep cuts on FM. While culture changed, American stayed more or less the same, even with personnel changes that could have brought them back into the limelight.
This show focuses on that transition, with the following songs;
True Love Travels on a Gravel Road – Elvis Presley
Kentucky Rain – Elvis Presley
In the Ghetto – Elvis Presley
It’s Only Love – B.J. Thomas
Thank You – Bobby Womack
Denver – Ronnie Milsap
Polk Salad Annie – Tony Joe White
If I Never Knew Your Name – Neil Diamond
Turn on a Dream – The Box Tops
