After the incredible debacle that hindered the first Aretha Franklin session at Fame studios, an experiment of sorts was arranged for future recordings.

Rather than sending Aretha to Muscle Shoals, Jerry Wexler decided to bring all of the session musicians up to New York. This could have been an epic failure. After all, up to this point, it was believed that the studios themselves and their producers were the factors that generated hits. If Rick Hall knew of this plan, he certainly would have gone out of his way to prevent it from happening, but somehow, the Memphis/Muscle Shoals session players all managed to get to New York to record the balance of Aretha’s album (under the premise of working for King Curtis). The results proved unequivocally that you could take the boys out of the country, but you could not take the country soul out of the boys.
