While Rick Hall toiled away in Florence Alabama, trying to establish himself in the music business, another label in nearby Memphis was doing the same, with moderate success.

Due to proximity and the generally small community that the music business represented circa the late ‘50s, most of the characters interacted with one another. By 1959, Elvis was long gone from the Memphis recording scene, and Sun Records started drifting into the sunset. In general, the bloom was off of the rose for that part of the country, but there was still some work for a small label like Hi Records, where a few of the area’s most talented musicians started to congregate. With this segment of our series, we tell the story of Hi’s early years.
