For a label to have any success, it needs at least two things – distribution and talent.

The label got lucky when Rufus Thomas walked in the door with his daughter Carla, and then even luckier (at least in the short term) when Atlantic called offering a deal for distribution. The basics were in place, but the main question – and fear – that faced Jim Stewart was whether or not more talent would be found. I mean, talent usually doesn’t just walk in off of the street. Well, in the case of Stax, their luck had only just begun.
