The Rolling Stones: First Singles
Episode 2
Episode date - August 16, 2013
In 1963, it must have seemed like a virtual impossibility that an English band could present American Blues music back to America and expect anything but disdain for their efforts.
America wasn’t even paying attention to its own culture, so why would anybody care to have a watered version thrust upon us by a bunch of British kids? But then, the Beatles happened, and all of a sudden, anything seemed possible. The Rolling Stones found themselves categorized as the ‘anti’ Beatles, sort of a yin to the Beatles yang.
They still didn’t write anything of significance, and were still struggling with a precarious balance of blues, rock and roll, and pure pop music, but that didn’t matter; the Beatles broke down a wall, and suddenly anything seemed possible, and then Rolling Stones were poised for anything. This show covers their first releases, as they attempt to prove that they were worthy of recording an entire album, not only for the English market, but also for America.
