Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds due a purist ethic that could not accept being in a band that would deliberately seek fame and fortune at the expense of musical values.

For Clapton, the blues was a calling that transcended his faith in the band, so he walked out just as they started to attract an international audience. With no set plan, he continued to woodshed, and found himself playing and living with John Mayall, another purist who shared Clapton’s obsession with American blues. Their work together was short-lived, but it marked a dedication that would define Clapton’s career from this point forward.
