It was something of a surprise – a very pleasant surprise – to see Lou Reed close out the ‘80s with one of the best albums of his career.

“New York” was honest, insightful, and quite thoughtful, with Reed expressing political ideas and expressing them as personal truths. It’s an album that is difficult to forget, and that is due as much to his presentation as to the songs themselves.
