Lou Reed and John Cale were out of touch and operating in separate circles when the news landed about Andy Warhol’s unexpected death. Both men took it hard, but from very different perspectives.

Cale stayed in touch with Warhol during his post-Underground years, but Reed for the most part did not. This difference became crucial after Warhol was almost killed by a gunshot wound, and Warhol developed resentment for Reed. In his diary, Warhol wrote that he ‘hated’ Reed, and this affected him.

When he and Cale convened for Warhol’s funeral, they made plans to work on a proper epitaph for him, and “Songs for Drella” is that epitaph. It’s a beautiful, moving and most importantly, honest depiction of their perspectives and their work together was seamless. It’s only a shame that it couldn’t last.

Unless otherwise specified, all songs are by Lou Reed and John Cale.
