For John Cale and especially for Lou Reed, there was a sense of rejuvenation in the last decade of the 20th century.

Although it was short-lived, the Velvet Underground reunited for a series of shows in Europe, the first time all four bandmembers played together in over twenty years. Reed started a relationship with Laurie Anderson that would last for the rest of his life, and it changed him profoundly. Neither Cale nor Reed was suddenly experiencing commercial success, but their artistic output remained interesting and at times quite exciting.
