    By 1938, the ‘Big Band’ era was well under way. Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, along with its myriad offshoots, performed at Carnegie Hall, marking the first time that jazz music was allowed in the renowned theatre.

    As we’ve discussed, the Great American Songbook was perfect fodder for jazz musician. Whether in big bands or smaller outfits, it was this group of songwriters who provided them with sophisticated songs that were simultaneously appealing to a discerning public. More and more, songs written for films were providing a large percentage of the material.
