I realize that our series on the Kinks got off to a slow start, due mainly to the fact that both Ray and Dave Davies have extensive autobiographies that cover their early years in amusing detail. It made for a few great stories, but fans of the band might wonder how we could cover two hours of the band’s history with nary a hit.

Well, episode three rectifies that. We still have a lot of backstories, this time told exclusively by Ray Davies, but he provides us with entertaining tales that convey the circuitous path the band took to arrive at their first national success. On the outside, it’s easy to imagine that the Kinks suddenly “appeared” on the scene with a hit in their back pocket, but these three one-hour shows do an adequate job of conveying that things are never quite as easy as they seem.
