Now that the band was free of Nico, they could pursue every crazy idea that had been fomenting in their heads.

Lou Reed and John Cale took advantage of their sudden newfound freedom to create some of the most challenging and difficult music imaginable. Commercial ideas were thoroughly abandoned, all in the name of artistic integrity.

“White Light/White Heat” must surely be one of the most challenging albums of the ‘60s, and there are sections that will surely make even contemporary listeners feel uncomfortable, but there’s no doubt that it pushed boundaries.
