It’s funny to think how our perceptions change over time. Back in 1995, it felt as though musical innovation had stagnated.

I can remember describing everything new as a hybrid of other things that preceded it. Now, I look back and see the songs presented in this show as being completely unique to their time, sounding distinctly different from the music of a decade earlier. Meanwhile, I also see how much music has changed since then. There is a ‘rootsiness’ to these songs that seems to have vanished.

Also, back in ’95, you could still feel a connection to genuine musicianship, based on playing ‘actual instruments’ and singing without auto tune correction. I never would have guessed it, but music from 1995 now seems almost quaint when compared to the stuff on today’s pop charts. Here are a few weird examples of album releases from 1995, showing a fairly broad scope of styles that somehow managed to comingle back then.

    Mojo Pin – Jeff Buckley

    So Real – Jeff Buckley
