“Exile on Main Street” was surely one of the Rolling Stones’ most haphazard albums – and that’s saying something – but since it’s the Stones, it’s that loose and murky feel that also makes it one of their best.

A good number of the tracks here were created on the spot, without much forethought, and there are many times where the band comes up with a rhythm or a phrase that might not have happened if it wasn’t for the intuitive nature of the recording sessions. Of their entire catalog, this is the album I find myself coming back to time and time again.
