The Beatles: “The Beatles” (aka ‘The White Album’)
Episode 54
Episode date - November 16, 2012
When “The Beatles” (aka ‘The White Album’) first appeared, some critics (including their producer, George Martin) grumbled that the album was too long, and that it should have ben pared down to a tight and concise single album.
With all due respect to Martin, who was an extraordinary producer that truly deserves the moniker of ‘the 5th Beatle’, Paul McCartney’s response to his critics summed it up rather succinctly. He said, “It’s great, it sold, it’s the bloody Beatles White Album. Shut up.”
He was right. Despite the tumult and controversy that enmeshed the band, “The Beatles” remains a constant best-seller and as a point of fact, is the best-selling album in the band’s catalog. We’ve had four and a half decades to reconsider the relevance of this double album, and the general consensus is that Paul was absolutely correct.
