The Beatles: HELP!
Episode 25
Episode date - March 2, 2012
The movie ‘Help!’ was a much stranger animal than “A Hard Day’s Night”, and from an artistic perspective, not as successful.
The reason was mostly because the Beatles developed a sense of cynicism about the entire filmmaking process while simultaneously exhibiting a raw silliness that was brought on by their recent discovery of marijuana. It also didn’t help that locations were chosen explicitly to coincide with the band’s desire to get away to a place more exotic than their usual stomping grounds, so a James Bond-like jump between exotic locales forced the scriptwriter to strain credibility well beyond the breaking point. Still, the attraction of the film still rested on the genial, charismatic personalities of the Beatles and, of course, those fantastic songs.
