While the ‘Help!” album was still ‘hot of the presses’ and the movie was still in theaters, the Beatles embarked on their second tour of North America. Although the U.S. was still in the full throes of Beatlemania, the Beatles themselves saw things a bit differently this time around.

The screaming crowds could instigate hilarity among the bandmembers but ultimately, were no longer a flattering novelty. In fact, they were becoming an annoyance. In addition, the Beatles’ use of mind-altering substances also played a role in their perspective of the entire debacle that touring entailed. Most of the newer material was too subtle or difficult for the insanity known as a “Beatles concert’, so the band was relegated to stick with older material, with very few variations in their presentation.

As a result, their playing suffered, and a combination of restlessness and tedium began to set in. In essence, this was the beginning of the end for the ‘live’ Beatles. Meanwhile, we do have these recordings to document what constituted a ‘Beatles concert’ in 1965.
