Latter-day projects by John Cale and especially Lou Reed, although remarkably ambitious, were not commercially successful, nor were they particularly appreciated by long-term fans – and their frustration is both obvious and justified.

Both Reed and Cale were still ambitious and certainly creative, but the focus on their earlier work with the Velvet Underground overwhelmed everything that they attempted. Of the two, Reed struggled most, but this show – which is our final show for this series (except for our interview with John Cale next week) – proves that the bandmembers simply could not compete with their own legacy.
