The Monkees - Holding On
Episode date - November 5, 2021
The Monkees’ fourth album was surely an artistic peak for the band, but holding their status was another matter.
The band’s own generation never bought on to them as a real band, and continued to doubt their musicianship, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. The TV show was not renewed for a third season, so they also started to lose the younger fans that followed them because of the show. Nevertheless, they plugged on, rehearsing new material for a fifth album that they hoped would maintain their popularity on some level.
This show captures the remaining bits of their fourth album, including what is arguably their best hit single, followed by a few attempts at material for their follow-up record.
