In late 1984, The Kinks released their 20th studio album in the same number of years. For two decades, the band had proven themselves to be both diverse and consistent, making great music while changing styles to suit the times and the band’s artistic desires.

Unfortunately, the years start to take a toll here. Ray Davies is still writing compelling songs and Dave Davies is rocking as hard as ever, but the disconnect that had defined their relationship starts to creep into the music on “Word of Mouth”, making even the best songs sound strained. This would be the band’s last album with Clive Davis and Arista Records.
