Ray Davies most certainly was a very complex personality.

His songwriting betrays his sensitivity to nuance, with a keen eye for detail and the emotional connection we have to our surroundings, but he also writes about underlying attitudes that get in the way of our ability to appreciate things at face value.

This dichotomy is what drives many of the songs on “Face to Face”, the band’s fourth album. It is also the beginning of a stylistic perspective that would color Davies’ writing for the rest of his career.
